Nov 9, 2024
Susanna Al-Hassan holds a remarkable place in Ghana's history as the nation's first female minister. Born in 1927 in Tamale, she became a trailblazer for women in politics.
After initially serving as the headmistress of Bolgatanga Girls' Middle School, her political career took off in 1960 when she was elected to Parliament, representing the Northern Region.
In 1961, President Kwame Nkrumah appointed her as Deputy Minister of Education, making her the first African woman to hold a ministerial position in Ghana.
Throughout her political career, Al-Hassan focused on social welfare and community development. She became the Minister of Social Affairs in 1963, a role she held until 1966, and she briefly returned to this position in 1967.
Her efforts were particularly notable in addressing issues related to women's welfare and the education of young girls, a cause she strongly believed in throughout her tenure.
In addition to her political achievements, Al-Hassan was an author, writing several children's books that reflect Ghana's cultural narratives. Her works include Issa and Amina and Asana and the Magic Calabash. She passed away in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of empowerment for women in Ghanaian politics.
