The Ayew brothers in action for Black Stars
Rahim Ayew, the eldest son of Ghanaian football legend Abedi Ayew Pele, has claimed that his younger brother, Jordan Ayew, was overlooked for the Black Stars captaincy due to perceptions that the Ayew family monopolizes leadership roles within the national team.
In May 2024, Black Stars coach Otto Addo dropped Jordan’s older brother, Dede Ayew, from the squad.
While it was widely expected that Jordan would succeed his brother as captain, Coach Addo instead assigned the role to Thomas Teye Partey.
Following Partey’s injury and absence from the double-header Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan, Addo again bypassed Jordan, giving the armband to Mohammed Kudus instead.
Ghana managed only one point from the two games, sparking public criticism.
In response to the backlash, Coach Addo has now confirmed that Jordan Ayew will captain the Black Stars in their upcoming Afcon 2025 qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
Rahim Ayew reacted to the issue on social media, expressing frustration over the decision.
"If you are talking about the national team, Dede joined in 2007, Jordan in 2012, and I went in 2009.
If I were still playing, these would be the captains. But thank God, I did my part, and I am no more, so the captains should be Dede and Jordan.
