Nov 20, 2024
A devastating accident on the Tamale-Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Wednesday has claimed the lives of six people and left several others injured. The collision involved a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 6068-19 and a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GR 7968-20.
The accident occurred near Mile 40 when the Kia Granbird bus, driven by Yakubu, collided head-on with the Kia Rhino truck. The Granbird bus was en route from Kumasi to Tamale, carrying 28 passengers, while the Rhino truck, loaded with watermelons, was traveling from Daboya to Goaso.
Initial investigations suggest that the crash resulted from a possible lapse in road safety measures, though authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause. The impact of the collision was severe, leading to significant casualties. Tragically, six individuals, including both drivers, three male adults, two females, and a child, lost their lives on the spot. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Emergency services, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Buipe, were swiftly deployed to the accident site. The fire service played a critical role in rescuing trapped passengers and clearing the wreckage to ensure the road was safe for use. The injured were promptly rushed to the Central Gonja District Hospital in Buipe for medical treatment. Sadly, the deceased bodies have been deposited at the hospital's morgue, awaiting autopsies and further investigation.
