In a significant development ahead of the 2024 presidential elections in Ghana, an aide to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Wontumi, has been arrested following the release of a controversial video making claims about the election process. The video, which has gone viral on social media, has sparked intense discussions and raised concerns regarding electoral integrity and the potential for unrest.
The arrest was made by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service after the video garnered widespread attention and drew backlash from various political and civil society groups. In the footage, the aide, identified as Kwame Owusu, allegedly makes inflammatory statements regarding the potential manipulation of the upcoming elections, calling into question the integrity of the electoral process.
Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), confirmed the arrest during a press briefing, stating that the police are committed to maintaining peace and order ahead of the elections. “The statements made in the video have the potential to incite violence and disrupt the electoral process. We will not tolerate any actions that could undermine the integrity of our democracy,” Dr. Akuffo-Dampare said.
