Ex-CIO Chief Reveals Secrets as Military Intelligence's Role in Baba Jukwa Scandal Unfolds
Nov 25, 2024
Former Director-General of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), Happyton Bonyongwe, has shared important insights in his memoirs about the Baba Jukwa Facebook page scandal that shook Zimbabwe. In his book titled "One Among Many Others: My Contribution to the Zimbabwean Story," Bonyongwe discusses how the arrest and legal actions against individuals tied to the Baba Jukwa page might have been prevented if Military Intelligence had revealed its involvement in the case during Joint Operations Command (JOC) meetings.
The Baba Jukwa page gained notoriety for leaking sensitive information related to the ZANU-PF party and the government, which led to significant political unrest. At its peak, the page published alarming content, including claims that then-President Robert Mugabe was severely ill or even deceased. Additionally, it exposed the identities and personal information of CIO agents, endangering their safety and that of their families.
Faced with the growing threat from this page, the CIO initiated an investigation that pointed to Edmund Kudzai, the editor of The Sunday Mail, as the person behind the Baba Jukwa account. Bonyongwe notes that Kudzai claimed he had taken control of the page under the direction of Military Intelligence, which had instructed him to manage it after the original Baba Jukwa, allegedly located in Australia, relinquished control. However, this critical information was not communicated to the CIO or during JOC meetings, which ultimately led to Kudzai facing prosecution.
