MTN launches its very own affordable 5G smartphone
Nov 26, 2024
MTN has launched its first self-branded smartphone in South Africa.
The MTN Icon 5G is primarily focused on affordability, with MTN sweetening the deal with added airtime and data bonuses.
The device sacrifices performance hardware for a big battery and a capable camera.
South Africa’s MTN has launched its first self-branded smartphone dubbed the MTN Icon 5G. While the telecom offers devices from OEMs like Apple, Samsung, Honor and others, this is MTN’s first device under its yellow branding via reseller partner BMB Communications.
Affordability is at the core of the Icon 5G, with MTN telling Hypertext via email that it retails for R2 499 cash, but customers can grab the device for R219 per month on a 1GB anytime data and 50 calling minutes for a 36-month contract.
If you buy it in cash and are looking to use it for prepaid, you will receive a once-off free 21GB anytime data and 3GB YouTube data as soon as you recharge it with R50 airtime.
