Arsenal's corner stats paint incredible picture - but Premier League rival benefits more
Dec 6, 2024
Premier League high-flyers Arsenal have benefited from set-piece goals both this season and last, and the numbers behind the Gunners' success have come to light
Arsenal's strength from corners has helped the Gunners revive their title push after a brief blip, and Wednesday's victory over Manchester United demonstrated how vital a tool it can be.
Both of the goals in the 2-0 win came from corners. Jurrien Timber scored the first when he met a Declan Rice delivery from the left, and 1-0 became two when Bukayo Saka's corner from the right found Thomas Partey and the midfielder's header was touched home by William Saliba.
United head coach Ruben Amorim recognised the threat after the game, pointing to the ability of Arsenal's wide forwards to go down the outside and win corners, knowing what might follow. Mikel Arteta's team scored from a corner in the previous match as well, with Gabriel breaking the deadlock in a 5-2 win at West Ham.
Since the start of the 2023-24 season, Arsenal have scored more goals from corners than any other team in Europe's top five leagues. When it comes to the proportion of goals scored via set-pieces, though, they're only second in the Premier League.
According to Opta data shared by the BBC, Arsenal's 22 goals from corners puts them five clear of the next-best team, reigning German champions Bayer Leverkusen. Fellow Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach are level with Leverkusen on 17, with AC Milan one behind them and Manchester City slightly further back on 15.
