Twenty finalists competed for the coveted Miss Soweto 2024 title.
The Soweto Theatre in Jabulani hosted the 45th Miss Soweto finale on November 30.
With excitement and anxiety filling the air, the families and many supporters of the top 20 attended the event.
Hosted by former Miss Soweto (2005), Lerato Kganyago Ndlala, the night saw entertainment and surprise performances from well-known artists Simphiwe Dana and Nia Pearl. Among the judges were Bridget Masinga, Grace Manchu and Masego Seemela.
When asked what they look for in the next Miss Soweto, they all said authenticity and someone who would represent Soweto well.
The newly crowned Miss Soweto 2024 is Mbali Khumalo (20) from Pimville. Onthatile Mohuba took the first princess and Boitumelo Molotsane the second.
During the questioning session, Khumalo said she advocates for mental health because of her experiences and would like to educate Soweto on it.
Khumalo thanked her mother for pushing her and encouraging her to enter the pageant.
“My mom always spoke highly of Miss Soweto. She has always pushed me to be my best and put myself out there. She was my mentor and motivator to enter the pageant,’’ said Khumalo.
Miss Soweto 2023, Paige Harvey, spoke about how the platform had changed her life and taught her about herself.
She added, “To the next Miss Soweto, know that this crown carries more than just beauty but purpose. It is an invitation to lead with passion and serve with humility.’’
