Harare City Council Suspends Controversial House Demolitions Amid Public Outcry
Dec 9, 2024
In a dramatic turn of events, the Harare City Council has announced the suspension of its ongoing house demolition operations, which had sparked widespread public outrage and protests across the capital. The decision follows mounting pressure from residents, human rights organizations, and political leaders who condemned the demolitions as unlawful and inhumane.
The city’s move to halt the demolitions came after several weeks of disputes between local authorities and homeowners in areas such as Mbare, Glen View, and Kuwadzana, where families faced the loss of their homes. The demolitions, part of the council’s crackdown on illegal and unapproved structures, had affected thousands of families, some of whom claimed they had lived in these homes for decades.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Harare City Council said the suspension was a response to the "growing concerns and legitimate grievances" raised by the affected residents. The council added that it would engage with the public, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to review its approach and address the housing challenges facing the city.
"The suspension is not an end to our efforts to ensure urban planning compliance, but we acknowledge the distress caused by the recent demolitions," said Harare City Council spokesperson, Mr. Prosper Chikore. "We are committed to finding a balanced solution that respects both the rule of law and the rights of our citizens."
