Mikki Osei Berko - Artist learn from Icon but nowadays it is different
Dec 8, 2024
Mikki Osei Berko, a respected actor and broadcaster renowned for his roles in Taxi Driver and Dada Boat, has expressed his concerns regarding the declining standards in Ghana’s creative arts industry, particularly in broadcasting, journalism, and filmmaking.
In a recent discussion on YM, Osei Berko reflected on how the industry has evolved over time, noting that many professionals today no longer prioritize mentorship and formal education. He emphasized that in the past, having a solid foundation was vital for achieving success in the industry.
Recalling his own experiences, Osei Berko mentioned how, despite receiving training from institutions like the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, they still looked up to industry legends such as Tommy Annan Forson, Charley Sam, and Kwame Sefa Kayi. These figures not only set the standard but also provided guidance that was instrumental in shaping the careers of younger professionals.
In contrast, Osei Berko expressed disappointment that current artists seem to overlook the value of learning from seasoned practitioners. “Many of today’s artists believe that technology can replace experience and mentorship,” he observed.
The actor also pointed out that while digital advancements have greatly transformed the industry, they have contributed to the decline in quality. “You can now edit an entire production on a smartphone, which is innovative, but without the proper training, the results often lack the necessary professionalism,” he said. Osei Berko’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of both experience and education in maintaining high standards in the creative arts industry.
