There are plenty of ways to elevate the wow factor of your entryway, but instantly changing the glass on your front door from frosted to clear has to rank up there as one of the coolest. Available through The Home Depot and powered by its Hubspace smart home device platform, the Feather River Doors Smart Glass is a fiberglass entry door that uses a special glass that can be switched between opaque and transparent by pressing a button, issuing a voice command, or using a mobile app. Starting at $798, it costs about twice as much as a traditional fiberglass door, but it works well and is easily one of the most unique smart home products we've seen, earning it our Editors’ Choice award.

Manufactured by Feather River Doors for The Home Depot, the Smart Glass is a fiberglass entry door that is filled with a high-density polyurethane foam. It is a 36-by-80-inch pre-hung door that requires a 38-1/4-by-82-1/8-inch rough opening and comes complete with ball-bearing hinges, PVC jambs, and predrilled holes for a deadbolt lock and a doorknob (not included). The door is unfinished and ready for paint and is available with a righthand or lefthand in-swing configuration.

The Home Depot offers four glass sizes: The 1/4-Lite door we tested costs $798, the 1/2-Lite door is $898, and the 3/4-Lite and full glass (1-Lite) doors go for $998. No matter the model, the door uses laminated glass with a Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) interlayer, a film that is used to create smart glass. In the on state, an electric charge applied to the glass aligns the liquid crystals, allowing light to shine through and making the glass transparent. In the off state, the electric charge is removed and the liquid crystals scatter and block light, making the glass opaque.
