Its universal appeal has helped many of the most popular shonen shows transcend the genre’s original demographic, and although action is usually a defining aspect of these titles, they rarely get too dark or mature for younger viewers to enjoy.
However, while most shonen heroes are paragons of virtue and honor, the genre has also produced several villains that are much, much darker than those seen in other shows geared toward children. From Dragon Ball Z to Demon Slayer, even the most beloved series have pushed the boundaries with the sheer cruelty of their villains.

Attack on Titan
Of all the prominent shonen anime in recent memory, arguably no title is more brutal than Attack on Titan. The violent series features some of the best plot twists and character development that the genre has to offer, but there’s no denying that the visceral carnage caused by its titular Titans is the most identifiable part of its presentation. As a result, it should come as no surprise that this gory series also includes a villain that is much more sinister than those seen in most kids’ shows: Eren Jaeger.
