Dec 16, 2024
Tariro Mnangagwa, the youngest daughter of Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his late wife Jayne Matarise, is making a name for herself in the world of film and conservation. Born in 1986 in Harare, Tariro grew up in a large family with five siblings and three half-siblings from her father’s second marriage. Her mother passed away in 2002 after battling cervical cancer.
Tariro has always had a passion for creativity. She started her education with a Diploma in Professional Photography from CityVarsity in Cape Town, before going on to earn an Honours degree in Sport Management from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. After completing her studies, Tariro returned to Zimbabwe, where she joined Akashinga, an all-female anti-poaching unit, and later worked with the International Anti-Poaching Foundation.
Her journey in filmmaking began when Sydney Taivavashe, a co-producer of the film Gonarezhou The Movie, invited her to play the role of 'Sergeant Onai'. The movie, released in 2020, addresses the serious issue of wildlife poaching and was created in partnership with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. Tariro not only starred in the film but also helped produce it.
Tariro has a clear vision for the kind of stories she wants to tell. She believes in telling stories that build a strong, proud, and united Africa. Her first production, Gonarezhou The Movie, won the Best First Feature Film award at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles in 2020.
