'I watched The Holiday – and biggest plot hole ever left me switching off'
Dec 24, 2024
I settled down to enjoy classic Christmas rom com The Holiday, but was left infuriated.
After seeing Jude Law reenact his famous Mr Napkin Head character from Christmas film The Holiday last week, I suddenly had an urge to watch the iconic festive film.
I first watched it on a sleepover while I was at primary school, and have revisited it probably five times since, with the film firmly cemented as one of my holiday favourites.
But I admit I haven't indulged in the schmaltzy movie for a few years, and so when I settled down to put it on TV last weekend, I realised I missed one major unanswered question.
I always thought the ending, where Cameron Diaz and Jude Law's characters (Amanda and Graham), and the couple played by Jack Black and Kate Winslet (Miles and Iris) end up spending New Year's Eve together, was just a sweet way to tie the film up.
But one thing hit me the other day. How did either of the couples make their relationships work? We just see the four of them, along with Graham's two daughters, celebrating and dancing in the living room.
There is absolutely no explanation about the logistics of their arrangement, and how they all managed to book time off work and fly across the world within days of meeting each other.
The film offered no real conclusion to Amanda and Graham's long-distance relationship dilemma, as she rushed back to declare her love for him, seemingly forgetting all about her home, career and responsibilities in LA.
