Ghana's Electoral Commission Needs a Reset - Hannah Tetteh
Dec 25, 2024
Hannah Tetteh, Ghana's former Minister for Foreign Affairs, has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to incorporate a thorough reform of the Electoral Commission in his proposed resetting agenda.
The former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West expressed grave concerns about the EC's conduct to journalists on Tuesday, December 24, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms to restore public confidence in the institution.
Tetteh's comments come amid ongoing discussions about the role of the EC in ensuring credible elections, with several stakeholders advocating for reforms to strengthen the institution's independence and accountability.
She advised the incoming administration to make these reforms a priority, as part of its broader pledge to reform governance and address systemic issues.
Their engagement has not inspired confidence in their objectivity and neutrality, and I think that a crucial post-election lesson for the commission should be how to implement a thorough reset, as failure to do so may compromise public trust in the EC's neutrality and competence in upcoming elections.
In order to restore public confidence, which is currently at an all-time low, a comprehensive review must be undertaken to identify necessary improvements.
