10 Best Romance Anime Tropes in Yakuza Fiancé, Ranked
Jan 9, 2025
This article contains spoilers for Season 1 of Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Li, now streaming in its entirety on Crunchyroll.
Shojo romance isn't always a primer on what makes a healthy relationship. Some of the best romance anime are pure tropey toxicity. The key difference between a distasteful, toxic romance and an entertaining one lies in the writing’s self-awareness. Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Li fulfills the promise of its premise: that it is a fantastical romp about a chaotic and exciting love story.
Yoshino's horrified when her grandfather arranges for her to be affianced to another yakuza heir her age. When she first meets Kirishima, she hopes he might be kind and respectful. By the end of the first episode, he's far closer to having his name on a restraining order than a marriage certificate. Kirishima's wretchedness goads Yoshino's own vengeful, cold nature. Yakuza Fiancé is a great balance of creative character work and old-fashioned shojo dark romance.
10 Yoshino's Never Had a Boyfriend Before the Anime Begins
Romance Trope: First Love
Yoshino's grandfather, Renji, brutally points out to Yoshino that she's in her late teens, but she's never had a boyfriend. It's true that Yoshino is rather sheltered and accompanied wherever she goes, so she doesn't know much beyond her family and small social circle. Renji throws his granddaughter to the dogs when he pairs her off with Kirishima.
