Cedi bouquets, hampers declared illegal by Bank of Ghana
Jan 17, 2025
In March 2023, the Bank of Ghana warned against using cedi banknotes as bouquets and hampers for gifting purposes, deeming such practices illegal and punishable by law.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, March 30, 2023, the Director of the Currency Department, Mr Dominic Owusu, expressed concern over the misuse of the currency, particularly during occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations.
He stressed that the cedi was issued solely as a medium of exchange for goods and services.
“Beyond being illegal, such acts lead to the defacement and spoiling of the notes, which come at a cost to the central bank for replacement,” Mr Owusu emphasised.
The remarks were part of a broader initiative to educate the public on currency preservation during the Ghana Month celebrations in March. Mr Owusu highlighted the importance of maintaining the quality and cleanliness of the local currency, describing it as a vital symbol of the nation.
The central bank urged all Ghanaians to prioritise preserving the cedi and to desist from any actions that could compromise its integrity.
