Veteran Zimbabwean politician Chenhamo Chimutengwende, affectionately known as “Chen Chimutengwende,” has died, marking the end of a life dedicated to the country's liberation struggle and political advancement. Born in 1946, Chimutengwende leaves behind a legacy as one of Zimbabwe's most enduring political figures.
Chimutengwende began his political journey in 1957 at just 14 years old in Highfield, Harare, demonstrating an early passion for the liberation of his nation. In 1963, he was appointed secretary for information and publicity in the ZANU-PF Youth League, cementing his commitment to the nationalist cause.
His dedication saw him undergo military training in Ghana in 1964, equipping him to play a vital role in Zimbabwe's liberation movement. This training not only demonstrated his personal commitment but also positioned him as a key figure in the fight against colonial rule.
Following Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980, Chimutengwende transitioned into roles that shaped the nation's governance and development. He served as ZANU PF provincial chairperson for Mashonaland Central, a position he held from 1986 for an unprecedented 17 years. His long tenure underscored his influence and unwavering dedication to fostering development in his province and beyond.
As a seasoned politician, Chimutengwende also served as Minister of Information, Post, and Telecommunications. His leadership in this role further highlighted his commitment to advancing Zimbabwe's national interests and shaping the country’s narrative on both local and international platforms.
