Nigeria To Host 2026 Commonwealth Senior And Veterans Fencing Championships
Jan 20, 2025

Nigeria has secured the hosting rights for the 2026 Commonwealth Senior and Veterans Fencing Championships, marking the first time an African country will host this prestigious event.

The Commonwealth Fencing Federation has conditionally approved Nigeria’s bid, with certain requirements to be fulfilled for the upcoming tournament.
This accomplishment builds on Nigeria’s successful hosting of the Fencing World Cup last year, which was the first event of its kind held in a Sub-Saharan African nation. More than 10 countries participated in the World Cup at Charter House Lagos, with notable performances from Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We successfully competed against Australia, a country experienced in hosting the Commonwealth Championships three times. This achievement is a testament to the strength of our bid and signifies Nigeria’s increasing recognition on the global stage.
“Our bid underwent a comprehensive evaluation over ten months, culminating in December’s technical review during our successful hosting of the World Cup. The upcoming tournament is expected to be one of the largest sporting events in Nigeria’s history, attracting over 600 athletes from more than 30 countries.
