Dr. Idriss Packaged Her Viral "Lip Basting" Hack, and It's Saving My Flaky Winter Lips
Feb 3, 2025
If I were ever to be asked to take part in a What's in My Bag video, it would honestly be pretty boring. Aside from the usual suspects—wallet, keys, sunglasses, lighter—my purse is usually about 99% lip products. Thanks to two rounds of , my lips are chronically dry and flaky so I always have a few different lip balm options (as well as liners, glosses, and lipsticks) on lock. However, thanks to NYC's current cold front and an anxiety-induced lip licking habit, my lips are dryer than ever and none of my usual balms and ointments are of any use, leaving me with —not my ideal way to kick off the year.
As usual, Instagram's favorite dermatologist and founder of Idriss Dermatology, Dr. Shereen Idriss, has my back. Idriss has gone viral time and time again for her extremely informative videos and helpful hacks, and her namesake skincare line is a staple in my cabinet (especially the Major Fade Dark Spot Serum). The brand's latest launch, the Barrier Baste Lip Basting Duo, perfectly packages her viral "lip basting" technique, just in time to save my flaky pout. Ahead, Dr. Idriss tells us all about the launch, plus my honest review.

The Inspiration

"The Barrier Baste Lip Basting Duo was inspired by my viral 'lip basting' hack," Dr. Idriss tells Byrdie. "With drastic changes in the weather, heaters on full blast, and constantly licking my lips, I am no stranger to chapped lips that stay cracked, despite going through all the lip balms on the market. Plus, lip scrubs left my lips feeling even worse and irritated after use."
