Is rising divorce in Zimbabwe really a bad thing? Here are some thoughts…
Feb 17, 2025
When news broke that Zimbabwe recorded 3,214 divorce cases in 2024, a significant jump from the 2,149 cases in 2023, the reactions, including ours, were swift and filled with concern.
Harare led the statistics with 1,945 cases filed and 996 finalised. Bulawayo followed with 825 cases filed and 383 completed, while smaller regions like Masvingo and Mutare saw far fewer numbers.
Counsellors and social commentators, of course, were quick to raise alarms, pointing fingers at infidelity, social media misuse, poor communication, lingering grudges, and gender-based violence (GBV) as key reasons for this uptick.
But before we press the panic button, perhaps it’s time to ask: Is this really all bad news?
Let’s figure it out.
Traditionally, marriage was seen as a lifelong institution, regardless of personal happiness or compatibility. But as society evolves, so do relationships. People are now more willing to walk away from toxic or unfulfilling unions rather than stay trapped in misery for the sake of appearances or societal expectations.
Could the rise in divorce rates actually be a sign that people are prioritising their mental health and well-being over social pressure? Maybe it’s a reflection of a society where individuals, especially women, feel empowered to make choices that serve their best interests.
