Whether you’re facing sudden showers or chilly breezes while traveling in the spring, a reliable, lightweight jacket is an essential part of any packing list.
“Look for something you can wear year-round,” says Justin Shachter, a NASA engineer and an outdoor enthusiast based in Los Angeles, California. “You’ll want to be protected during a 70-degree day, yet warm enough if it gets down to 45 or 50.”
“I’m looking for something water resistant. It also should be packable, something that you can throw in a backpack or tie around your waist,” adds Chris Hull, a men’s product expert in Park City, Utah. Additionally, Hull says it “definitely needs a hood and a good chest pocket ... That’s key for me.”
With spring’s unpredictable weather, it’s also a good idea to keep layers in mind, says Washington, D.C.-based filmmaker and avid camper Rob Shore.“If you want to layer, a breathable and lightweight jacket is essential,” he says.
We took our experts’ advice to heart and scoured online shops for the best men’s spring jacket. With three layers of waterproofing—the highest level—and breathable materials, the Cotopaxi Impermeo came out on top in our assessment. But we found many more for different needs.
