17 Ways to Wear the "Chocolate Cherry" Hair Color Trend This Spring
Mar 4, 2025
Looking to switch up your dark brown hair but not ready for a full-on color change? Allow us to introduce you to chocolate cherry hair, a stunning dark reddish brown. Think of this shade as the moody sister to cherry cola hair—a touch deeper with fewer hints of purple. The color is super versatile, whether you simply opt for a couple of highlights or nearly a full redhead moment. So it is the perfect choice for any brunette looking to channel the '90s-inspired hair trend.
The Color Breakdown
"Chocolate cherry-colored hair is a rich, deep shade that combines warm, brownish-chocolate tones with a reddish, cherry-like hue," celebrity hairstylist Jessica Elbaum explains. "It's a striking color that can range from a subtle, deep reddish-brown to a vibrant and bold cherry-red over brown hair."
While chocolate cherry hair looks particularly great on those with warm, olive-based undertones, it can work on virtually any skin tone and hair type—it's all about what shade you choose. For cooler undertones, hairstylist Gina Rivera suggests adjusting to a more violet-based red so that it doesn't make the skin look washed out.
According to Elbaum, the depth of the color adds dimension to the hair, while the richness makes hair appear extremely shiny. While the color requires less maintenance than other shades of red, Lauren Paglionico, master colorist and owner of LRN Beauty, says to plan for touch-ups or a gloss every six to eight weeks.
