Mar 6, 2025
Prominent YouTube adventurer Andrew Cross, known as 'Desert Drifter' to his 500,000 subscribers, has died age 36.
Cross died on Tuesday after being taken off life support, a month after suffering a severe brain injury in a car accident in Colorado.
His sister, Jenna Spooner, announced his passing on the CaringBridge website, stating, 'Andrew's spirit is free, surrounded by light and love.'
She shared that loved ones gathered around him in his final moments, walking a loop around the ICU with him on a mobile ventilator as hospital staff lined the hallway in his honor. Friends and family read scripture, prayed, and sang as life support was removed.
Cross was involved in a devastating two-car collision on January 31 when his vehicle was rear-ended at high speed while stopped.
The Mesa County Coroner's Office confirmed on Wednesday that he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver of the other vehicle, Ragnar Nickolas Kristl, has been charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, careless driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
A Virginia native, Cross gained popularity through his YouTube channel, where he documented desert explorations and mountain climbs with a historical perspective.
His passion for adventure and storytelling resonated with hundreds of thousands of followers, who have since flooded social media with tributes.
