New homeless shelter set to open soon in Somerset town
Mar 9, 2025
It will house and support six people who are living rough
A new homeless shelter run by the charity Julian House will open soon in Shepton Mallet. The new centre, which will replace the old one at The Dusthole in Shepton Mallet, will open in Peter Street next month.
It will house and support six people who are living rough at a newly adapted premises in Shepton Mallet. Last week residents of Peter St and the surrounding areas were sent a letter by Julian House informing them of their move from The Dusthole, and inviting them to a meeting to discuss the matter on Tuesday night, March 11.
The letter states: “From 1 st April 2025, our off-the-streets service will be transitioning from The Dusthole to three dispersed sites across Mendip. One of these sites will be on Peter Street, directly neighbouring your property.”
The letter goes on to say they will be supporting fewer people at each property, with just six beds at Peter St and Julian House staff will be overseeing the property at night.
The local team from the charity will be hosting a community engagement session at Shepton Mallet library at 8pm on Tuesday, March 11 and local people are invited to come along and ask questions.
People can also contact the service manager directly by telephone on 07399219726 and can arrange a tour of the property before the clients move in.
