Tom Cruise
’s divisive film
Jack Reacher
is set to air on TV tonight, over a decade after the actor’s casting divided fans.
The 2012 film adaptation of Lee Child’s 2005 book One Shot saw Tom cast in the leading role of Reacher, an ex-military police officer who is called on to assist in a homicide investigation after a deadly sniper attack.
The film also stars Rosamund Pike as defence attorney Helen Rodin and Richard Jenkins as Helen’s father and Pittsburgh’s district attorney.
The movie is due to air on ITV1 at 10.15pm tonight, and will be available to stream on ITVX afterwards.
Cruise's role in the film divided some fans at the time due to the way the character is described in the books. In the novels, Jack Reacher is described as being broad and 6’5” tall. Cruise, meanwhile, is around 5’7”.
The film was followed by a sequel in 2016 and, more recently, was adapted into Amazon Prime series , starring Alan Ritchson in the main role.
According to author Lee Child, the original Jack Reacher film featured a scene where Cruise’s character mocked his height on screen, although it was later cut.
"In the first movie, there's a scene where Reacher's in a sports bar and five guys pick a fight with him so he takes them outside," he recalled.
"When we shot that scene, he (Cruise) did a sort of spontaneous alternative take where the five guys are around him in a semi-circle and he goes, 'One, two… What? You expected somebody bigger?'
