The Ice-type is one of Pokémon's more infamous typings. Despite being a part of the franchise since the beginning, there are fewer Ice-type Pokémon than any others. Along with being rare, difficult to access in the video games, and rarely featured in the anime, the specific nature of what it means to be an Ice-type can sometimes leave their designs with a lot left to be desired.
Ice-type Pokémon may not be the most popular breed, but, at their best, they're still some of the franchise's coolest creatures. Typically, the best designed among them are those with a general ice-theming, rather than those who actively incorporate ice into their appearances, but this isn't always the case. And, while there aren't too many Ice-type Pokémon overall, the typing still belongs to plenty of Legendary Pokémon, regional variants, and Paradox Pokémon.

Like other less common typings, Generation III is where the Ice-type really began coming into its own. A prime example of this is Spheal, the Ice/Water-type pre-evolution of Sealeo and Walrein. Spheal is utterly adorable with its small, round appearance, and its bright, vibrant palette fits with the Hoenn region's aesthetic wonderfully.
