Reddit user posts 1998 H-E-B receipt. See how much the same items cost now.
Mar 26, 2025

A dollar definitely doesn't go as far as it used to at the grocery store, shown in this H-E-B receipt from Dec. 11, 1998.

In a Monday post to r/HEB, the user dropped a photo of a vintage H-E-B receipt from Dec. 11, 1998, along with the following comment: "My grandma passed away in 2001. Recently I was going through some old boxes in the shed and came across some of the things my mom saved. One of those things was my grandmas purse and in it was this receipt from 1998. Look at the price of those eggs!"
It's a familiar shopping list. Flour tortillas, Ro-Tel, chorizo, bacon, Roma tomatoes. On the one hand, it's a receipt that shows the city still shops pretty much the way it did nearly 30 years ago.

What's different — and has drawn comments from more than 350 users and nearly 5,000 up- and down-votes — is the price on every single item.
User Hexagram_11 said, "I was raising a big pack of kids and feeding them on a tight budget at HEB in 1998. They did have affordable prices! Those 89-cent bags of potato chips and 59-cent loaves of sandwich bread got us through the hungry teenage years for sure."
"I'm always amazed when I see receipts from back then and see how many items cost less than a dollar," said user ElKirbyDiablo. "I'm in my 30s so I was there but it still surprises me. A dollar can't buy you anything now."
