Apr 2, 2025
A dramatic shootout between police and a gang of suspected cash-in-transit robbers ended in bloodshed in Bonela, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday, leaving five suspects dead. The deadly confrontation has once again highlighted the escalating violence linked to organized crime syndicates targeting cash vans across South Africa.
The gun battle erupted when a police task force, acting on intelligence, intercepted a group of heavily armed men believed to be planning a cash-in-transit heist. The suspects, who were reportedly traveling in a convoy of vehicles, opened fire when officers attempted to stop them, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.
High-Stakes Confrontation
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker confirmed the incident, stating that officers from the Hawks, the Tactical Response Team, and the K9 Unit were involved in the operation.
"Our team received credible intelligence about a group of suspects planning a cash-in-transit robbery. When we attempted to intercept them, they immediately opened fire on our officers. A shootout ensued, resulting in the deaths of five suspects," Naicker said.
According to police, the suspects were armed with high-caliber weapons, including automatic rifles, and were prepared for a violent confrontation. Several firearms were recovered at the scene, along with bulletproof vests and stolen vehicles believed to have been used in previous crimes.
