In theory, a compliment is a nice thing. Unfortunately, as the sort of guys who say “What? It was supposed to be a compliment!” have proven, there exist less-than-polite versions.

There is, of course, the classic backhanded compliment, which can be seen flung with abandon across every high school cafeteria in the country, but you can also get a compliment that’s not necessarily mean, but definitely doesn’t make you feel warm and fuzzy, either. One that’s just, more than anything, weird. For example, a girl once complimented my eyelashes and asked if I wore mascara in middle school, and that’s clearly still occupying valuable mental real estate for me.
