Apr 4, 2025
The case of former First Lady Patience Jonathan has garnered significant attention due to the prolonged detention of 15 of her domestic staff at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Bayelsa State. These individuals have been imprisoned since 2019 over allegations of robbery, yet they remain behind bars without any formal court convictions, raising serious concerns about justice and due process.

Reports indicate that the trial of these workers has faced numerous delays, allegedly due to the influence exerted by Jonathan. This situation has led to a substantial outcry regarding the presumption of innocence, a fundamental principle of law that suggests individuals should be considered innocent until proven guilty. The ongoing detention of these workers, who have not been convicted of any crime, highlights a troubling scenario where legal rights may be overlooked in favor of personal power and influence.
SaharaReporters has obtained exclusive photographs of 12 of the incarcerated domestic staff, who have now spent nearly six years in confinement. Their names include Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Achese, Sunday Reginald, Vivian Golden, and Emeka Benson. The plight of these individuals is compounded by the fact that they are being held without the due process that should accompany any criminal allegations.
