‘This is the Kingdom and you were the king’ – Marty Morrissey delivers heartfelt eulogy at Mick O’Dwyer’s funeral
Apr 5, 2025
MARTY Morrissey remarked 'This is the Kingdom and you were the king' while delivering a beautiful eulogy at Mick O'Dwyer's funeral.
The Kerry GAA icon was buried in his native Waterville on Saturday afternoon - two days after his death at the age of 88.
Early on in proceedings the priest noted that the emblems of O'Dwyer's life by his coffin included a Kerry flag as well as a red and white one - the colours of his local parish of Waterville.
While Gaelic football was his primary sporting love, golf clearly held a special place in his heart too.
This was portrayed by a trophy he won at the local golf club.
Also present was an accordion as he was a keen musician and his favourite type of chocolate bar.
The priest also noted how Micko kept a miniature Sam Maguire close at hand to remind him of the many great days he enjoyed bringing it back to Kerry.
He then quipped that he heard the other day that the real Sam Maguire is 'only about three and a half months away'.
Taoiseach Micheal Martin and GAA President Jarlath Burns were among a star-studded crowd of mourners while President Michael D Higgins was represented by Colonel Tom McGrath.
Another familiar face in Marty Morrissey was called upon to read out one of the closing eulogies.
The 66-year-old began by wondering: "Mo chara, what can I say?"
