Ukraine Volleyball: First Loss of the Year After League of Nations Defeat
Apr 6, 2025
Polkowice, Poland – The Czech Republic Women’s National Team suffered a setback in their Nations League campaign, falling 1-0 too a resilient Ukrainian side. Despite controlling possession for stretches of the match, the Czechs were unable to convert opportunities into goals, ultimately surrendering the top spot in Group B4.
Coach Jitka Klimková opted for a familiar starting lineup, mirroring the squad that faced Croatia and Albania earlier in the year. Barbora Votíková guarded the net, shielded by the central defensive pairing of Lucie Bendová and Eliška Sonntagová. Captain Klára Cahynová anchored the midfield, while Andrea Stašková spearheaded the attack.
The opening quarter-hour saw the Czech team struggle to break down Ukraine’s compact defense. The Ukrainians, disciplined and organized, effectively stifled the Czech attack and looked hazardous on the counter.
Eva Bartoňová had the Czech Republic’s frist real chance around the 20-minute mark, rising to meet a set-piece delivery inside the penalty area. However, her header lacked power and direction, failing to trouble the Ukrainian goalkeeper.
Ukraine threatened in the seventh minute when Alena Pěčková’s turnover on the right flank led to a dangerous cross. Nicole Kozlov met the ball with her head, but her attempt sailed just wide of the Czech goal – a major let-off for the home side.
