Thunder Kills Eight Cows in Ondo Farming Community
Apr 7, 2025
A thunderstorm struck and killed eight cows in the Ori-Ohin area of Ifon, located in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident caused shock and stirred discussions in the community, especially among local farmers and leaders who believe the deaths were connected to ongoing conflicts over farmland use.
The cows, reportedly belonging to Fulani herders, were found dead in a part of the community known for its agricultural activities.
Residents say the animals had been roaming freely and destroying crops, which has been a source of concern for a while.
Despite a law in Ondo State banning open grazing, the herders were said to have continued bringing their livestock into farmlands, especially those farmed by settlers from Kogi State.
Farmers in the community claimed they had reported these actions to security forces, but with little or no change.
Out of frustration, some farmers were said to have taken spiritual steps to protect their lands.
After the thunder struck and killed the cows, many locals believed it was a result of these spiritual efforts.
Community leaders also blamed the herders for ignoring several warnings to stay away from farmland.
They noted that similar incidents have happened in the past when herders entered areas considered sacred by the local people.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the event, describing it as a natural occurrence.
