McDonald's issues update on planned drive thru in Greater Manchester neighbourhood
Apr 9, 2025
Plans for the new drive-thru emerged last summer, but there has been a twist in the tale
McDonald’s has confirmed it will not be building a new drive-thru in Hyde.
The fast-food giant revealed its plan to build on the Viceroy Indian restaurant site in August last year, submitting official proposals a few months later.
But the plans were suddenly withdrawn last week. The new drive-thru restaurant had been earmarked for Grafton Street - between the M67 and Clark Way.
The American restaurant chain said it changed its mind following feedback. Bosses did not rule out another restaurant nearby.
A McDonald’s spokesperson: “Following feedback received as part of the planning process we have taken the decision to withdraw this planning application. We are always on the lookout for suitable locations and are currently exploring a number of opportunities in the wider area.”
The closest McDonald’s restaurant to Hyde is in Mottram. McDonald’s bosses said the plan would have created around 120 new jobs to the area.
Planning papers read: “We are excited to be bringing forward proposals for a new McDonald’s drive-thru restaurant off Grafton Street in Hyde.
“The creation of a new drive-thru restaurant would also deliver a range of benefits, including significant investment into the local economy and the creation of approximately 120 new jobs, in a range of full and part-time positions.
