Nzema Group Raises Land Acquisition Concerns Amid Multi-Billion Dollar Project In Western Region
Apr 9, 2025
In a move that is igniting fierce controversy and community unrest, the Nzema group in Ghana is raising alarms regarding a colossal land appropriation amounting to 20,000 acres for the proposed multi-billion-dollar Petroleum Hub project in the Western Region. As the government ramps up preparations for this ambitious venture, allegations of a lack of proper consultation and transparency are capturing headlines and drawing the ire of local stakeholders.
The proposed Petroleum Hub, envisioned to serve as a major node for oil and gas processing, storage, and distribution, promises immense economic benefits, including job creation and increased revenue for the nation. However, the Nzema group—composed of local chiefs, landowners, and community members—asserts that the project is being greenlit without adequate input from the people most affected: the citizens of Nzema.
With rich natural resources abundant in the area, the community has long been at the center of oil exploration activities. Yet, many feel marginalized and fear that their rights and land will be disregarded once again in the pursuit of profit. “We stand to lose our livelihood and our heritage,” remarked Nana Kwesi Agyemang, a prominent local chief. “If this project goes ahead without our consent, our ancestors will roll in their graves.”
