The following contains spoilers for Black Mirror Season 7, Episode 1, "Common People," now streaming on Netflix. This article also contains a brief mention of assisted suicide.
Over the years, the Black Mirror TV series has used satire to address real-world issues. It dissects politics like in Season 1's "The National Anthem," and takes shots at racism in Season 4's "Black Museum." It also dissects the systematic failures of established institutions.
The latter scenario is evident in Black Mirror Season 7's premiere. Here, "Common People" stars Chris O'Dowd as Mike and Rashida Jones as his wife, Amanda. They fall into a trap that many Americans do when they become ill, which builds to a harrowing ending as Mike has to circumvent a sinister piece of technology that literally acts as a lifeline.

Amanda is a primary school teacher who hopes to have a child with her hard-working welder husband. Unfortunately, she goes comatose with no neural activity, due to a brain tumor. Mike is told that she'll remain like that, unless he accepts a new medical procedure: Rivermind. It's a process that surgically removes the cancerous brain tissue and replaces it with synthetic material.
