Blink-182 fans debate over the true meaning behind the band's name
Apr 10, 2025
Blink-182 have a song asking 'what is my age again?' - but maybe they should be discussing their name instead.
Fans of the '90s band have been embroiled in a fierce debate over what the band's true name is - with many confused about what it really means.
The band, known for hits such as All The Small Things, and I Miss You, was formed in 1992.
Its members consist of Mark Hoppus on bass and vocals, Tom DeLonge on guitar and vocals, and Travis Barker on drums.
Now, over 30 years after the band was formed, fans have taken to Reddit to share their theories over how they landed on the famous name.
'Does anyone know why they went with "blink" to begin with? I've never seen anyone talk about it really. We know they were blink, and added -182 because of another band with the same name. But why "blink?"' questioned the user.
The user later edited his post to add: 'I'm getting multiple stories about why "blink" and more for why "182" so basically we're back to square one. None of us know for sure lol.'
Fans have since weighed in with their own theories, pondering what the numbers 182 actually represents.
'I thought they had said 182 was the number of times the word f**k was used in Godfather or something. Maybe that was just another sarcastic response lol,' one Reddit fan shared.
Another had a similar theory, writing: 'This is entirely anecdotal but I was once told that "blink" was slang for "f**k" among their friends (as in something like "blink you, dude"), and 182 was a nickname for their high school. But I wouldn't be surprised if one of my friends made that up.'
