‘Common People’ ending explained: ‘Black Mirror’ stars give their takes on the devastating episode
Apr 11, 2025
What would you do for love? “Common People,” the first episode of “Black Mirror’s” seventh season, is a dark look at the intersection of a life-saving technology, capitalism and a long-term relationship.
The episode also feels meta, poking fun at some of the loudest criticism Netflix (and other streaming giants) have received: high subscription prices and increasing tiers.
The episode follows elementary school teacher Amanda (Rashida Jones) and welder Mike (Chris O’Dowd) over the course of a few years as they navigate a world in which an experimental medical treatment operates like a subscription service.
TODAY.com caught up with stars Rashida Jones and Tracee Ellis Ross, who plays the sales representative of the medical service, to talk about the episode’s moral quandaries.

The premise of ‘Common People’ — and why Mike had ‘no choice’
Mike and Amanda’s happy life changes instantly when Amanda falls into a coma. Turns out she had an advanced tumor in her brain. She has only one hope of waking up: An experimental treatment called “Rivermind.”
Gaynor (Tracee Ellis Ross), a Rivermind salesperson and patient, speaks to Mike in the hospital. She says the surgery will remove the damaged part of Amanda’s brain, make a backup clone of it on Rivermind’s computer’s mainframe and replace the tumor area with healthy tissue, allowing cognitive function to flow from the backup on the computer to her brain via the cloud.
