Rebekah Vardy loses to Coleen Rooney again over 'Wagatha' costs
Apr 10, 2025
An appeal by Rebekah Vardy related to alleged misconduct by Coleen Rooney's lawyers was dismissed
A High Court judge has ruled that Coleen Rooney's lawyers did not commit misconduct.
Lawyers for the wife of ex-Manchester United star Wayne Rooney were accused of 'deliberately' understating some of her costs in her high-profile Wagatha Christie libel battle with Rebekah Vardy.
Rebekah, married to Leicester City's Jamie Vardy, unsuccessfully sued Coleen for libel in 2022.
It came following Coleen's 2019 claims that Rebekah's Instagram account was behind leaks to the press.
Mrs Justice Steyn found in July 2022 that her claims were 'substantially true'.
The judge later ordered Rebekah to pay 90 per cent of Coleen's costs, including an initial payment of £800,000.
The two were then in further dispute over how much Rebekah should pay in legal costs after losing her court battle.
Coleen's legal bill came to £1,833,906.89 - said to be three times the agreed costs budget of £540,779.07.
Rebekah's legal representative argued this was 'disproportionate'.
Lawyers for Coleen claimed the challenge was 'misconceived'.
Last October, a specialist costs judge ruled Coleen's lawyers did not commit misconduct after they were accused of understating some of her costs.
Senior Costs Judge Andrew Gordon-Saker said there was a 'failure to be transparent' by Coleen's legal team.
