These commuters are still waiting for NJ Transit refunds as deadline approaches
Apr 10, 2025
NJ Transit officials said late last month that refunds for unused tickets were on the way and should be received by the first week in April.
But by the end of last week, some commuters told NJ Advance Media they were still waiting.
The ticket refunds were offered after the agency changed the ticket expiration policy to 30 days starting on July 1 last year as part of NJ Transit’s efforts to cut costs. Tickets had no expiration date under the old policy.
Many complained they had stacks of unused paper tickets and virtual wallets with spare tickets. They argued they wouldn’t be able to use these tickets in time and asked for refunds.
Last May, NJ Transit announced a refund program.
The refund policy applied to one way and 10-trip bus, rail and light rail tickets purchased before June 1 and submitted by Dec. 31.
On March 27, officials said they planned to have refunds processed and to customers by the end of last week.
But some riders who contacted NJ Advance Media last week said they were still waiting for refunds.
Customers who bought digital tickets through the mobile app were the largest and easiest group to refund – they received credit in the app’s mobile wallet for unused tickets.
But the agency also received several hundred thousand requests for harder to process refunds for paper tickets. In January, officials said they hoped to have them all processed by March.
