Walmart customers are just learning logo's meaning and what happened to 'Smiley'
Apr 10, 2025

The Walmart logo has been a staple in the US for decades, but customers have only just found out what it truly means - and customers are surprised

Walmart has been a part of our lives since 1962, when the first store was launched in Arkansas. The famous blue and yellow branding that we recognise today has gone through multiple changes, from simple, blue sans-serif type, through black, Western-style lettering to brown, blocky text.
The current logo has been in use since 2008 - with the company ditching the hyphen - and recently underwent an update, with a brighter blue and a heavier weight font, making the overall look of the brand fresher. According to Walmart, the font is inspired by the "classic trucker hat" of founder Sam Walton, who opened that first Walmart store in 1962.
And that iconic yellow asterisk is still there - but some people have been left surprised about what it actually represents. Many people thought it was a star or a perky little flower - but in fact it's a spark.
Walmart revealed the deeper significance of the symbol - attributing it to their founder's vision: "It's a symbol of the spark of inspiration Sam Walton had when he opened his very first store".
Continuing, they shared: "It's a symbol of all of the great ideas that have helped to develop our company over the years. And it's a symbol of the inspiration that's inside all of us".
