Will Alex Volkanovski retire after UFC 314? Assessing the Aussie's future options
Apr 10, 2025
Alex Volkanovski is getting set to headline his seventh UFC pay-per-view this weekend in Miami at UFC 314 when he faces Brazil's Diego Lopes for the vacant featherweight strap.
The 36-year-old is looking to recapture the featherweight title after a devastating knockout loss in his last outing at the hands of Ilia Topuria, one of the sport's emerging superstars.
This marked his second consecutive defeat after falling short in his bid to capture the lightweight title on short notice at the end of 2023.
The string of losses, as well as a self-imposed 14-month layoff, has led pundits to speculate over whether Volkanovski's next fight will be his last.
On on Wednesday, Helwani posed the question about the Aussie's future and noted that this was one of the biggest talking points heading into the event.
"I do feel like there is a chance that if Volk loses on Saturday, there is a chance that he retires," he said.
"He told us about a month and a half or so ago that he was toying with the idea of even coming back."
From everything that has been coming out of the Volkanovski camp over the last while, his retirement on Sunday seems contingent on a loss.
At Wednesday's media scrum, the former champ seemed focused on potential future match ups, which would suggest that hanging up the gloves is unlikely to be on Volk's agenda coming out of the weekend.
