Apr 11, 2025
Tariro Washe, the daughter of Zimbabwe’s current president, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, is a prominent figure in the country’s creative industries and conservation efforts. Born to the late Jayne Matarise and President Mnangagwa, Tariro spent her formative years in Harare before relocating to Cape Town, South Africa, where she pursued higher education. At the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, she earned an Honours degree in Sport Management. Tariro’s passion for the arts also led her to CityVarsity, where she obtained a Diploma in Professional Photography, further honing her creative talents.
Tariro has made significant contributions to both the film industry and wildlife conservation. She is known for co-producing Gonarezhou: The Movie, an anti-poaching film that garnered attention at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles in 2020, winning the award for Best First Feature Film. Her involvement in filmmaking extends to producing The Story of Nehanda, a period drama highlighting the life of a female spirit medium who led a rebellion against colonial rule in 1896 Zimbabwe.
Beyond her work in film, Tariro is also deeply committed to wildlife preservation. She joined Akashinga, an all-female anti-poaching ranger unit, where she works to protect Zimbabwe’s endangered wildlife. Her involvement in this initiative reflects her broader dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
