Apr 12, 2025
Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has candidly opened up about the emotional and mental health struggles she faced following personal losses and overwhelming responsibilities. In an exclusive interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Akindele revealed the toll her mother’s passing, marital issues, and the pressures of single-handedly raising her children took on her.
Akindele, widely known for her role in the hit series Jenifa's Diary, admitted that the passing of her mother in 2020 left her shattered. Despite this, she explained that she is not one to linger in mourning, preferring to push through her grief quickly. However, this approach backfired, leaving her in a fragile state. "I do not like to mourn. I just wanted to get out of it quickly, but it affected me after my mum’s death. I almost died," she shared. The actress also revealed that this emotional toll took a physical and mental toll on her, pushing her to the brink.
Akindele also talked about the pressure of dealing with public accusations, especially when one of her movie cast members accused her of underpaying them. "For the first time, I went live on social media, and I’m like, you all should leave me alone," she said, expressing how the online criticism added to her already heavy emotional burden. Besides the grief from her mother’s passing, Akindele spoke about her marriage falling apart and the political setbacks she faced, all of which contributed to her breaking point.
