Fans of the Great British Bake Off voiced worry for Gloria Hunniford after the programme took an unexpected turn when host Alison Hammond made a surprise announcement.

The 85-year-old television personality participated in the Stand Up to Cancer episode but , prior to the judging of her final bake, Alison announced that Gloria was unwell and unable to continue. She explained: "Now before we start the judging we should mention the fact that Gloria is not here. She is not feeling very well but she wanted us to carry on anyway."

Gloria sought to ease any concerns by uploading a picture on her Instagram account that stated she managed well in the competition, noting that she did so for a "all in aid of a cause very close to my heart". This comes after losing her daughter, Caron, to breast cancer back in 2004.

Gloria later told the Mirror: "I had a terrible fall at the end of the programme, so I never got to finish it."
