EFF escalates Orania fight with planned premier office protest
Apr 15, 2025
Tensions are rising in the Northern Cape as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) plan a march to the offices of Premier Dr Zamani Saul to express their concerns over the existence of Orania, a predominantly Afrikaans town in the province. The demonstration, scheduled for 22 April 2025, reflects ongoing debates about cultural autonomy, national unity, and the legacy of South Africa’s divided past. While reports have circulated about the EFF’s intentions, the language used in some claims, including derogatory terms, remains unverified and requires careful consideration to maintain a balanced perspective.
Orania, established in 1991 by Afrikaner nationalists, has long been a focal point of controversy. With a population of approximately 3,500, the town operates as a private entity, promoting Afrikaner culture, language, and self-sufficiency. Its supporters argue it is a legitimate cultural project, operating within the bounds of South African law, and point to its clean streets and low crime rates as evidence of its success. Critics, including the EFF, contend that Orania’s model fosters division, echoing apartheid-era ideologies, and undermines the constitutional commitment to inclusivity and non-racialism. The EFF’s planned march follows a failed meeting on 11 April 2025 with Orania’s leadership and the Freedom Front Plus, where discussions about the town’s future reached no agreement, prompting the party to escalate its campaign.
