McDonald's 'first-ever menu' resurfaces as 1940 offerings include 'tempting burgers'
Apr 15, 2025

We all have our favorite McDonald's order, but you'd be surprised to learn that the menu was very different when the first restaurant opened in the 1940s in California, with the chain then spreading out to dominate the fast food world

Whether you're a Big Mac enthusiast or a nuggets aficionado, everyone has their favorite McDonald's meal for those takeaway cravings, and you will soon have more choices as the fast food giant has added a new permanent item to their menus. But did you know that the fast-food giant's original menu was significantly smaller compared to today's extensive options?
The first McDonald's restaurant was opened by Richard and Maurice McDonald in 1940 in San Bernadino, California. It was vastly different from the McDonald's we know today, with numerous changes made to the menu over the years - including adding a beloved breakfast item in recent weeks - even the name has evolved.
As per the McDonald's website, the drive-in establishment was initially called 'McDonald's Speedee Service System', designed to be a place that "offered great tasting food, served incredibly quickly."
While the chain now caters to an impressive 68 million people daily, the menu from over 80 years ago would likely not draw the same crowd due to its limited choices, reports the Mirror.
