Vadakara railway station awaits inauguration after major facelift
Apr 15, 2025
Vadakara railway station, the only station in Kozhikode district developed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), is awaiting formal inauguration after the completion of renovation work. According to railway sources, while the first phase of renovation work has been completed, the date for the official inauguration is yet to be fixed. It is also the first station in Kerala, the work of which have been completed under the scheme.
Vadakara railway station (also known as Badagara—Station Code: BDJ) is a major station under the Palakkad Division of Southern Railway, located on the Shoranur–Mangaluru route. Of the ₹30.82 crore sanctioned for the project, ₹21.66 crore has been spent in the current phase. The second phase of renovation will commence later.
A significant portion of the funds was used for beautification, particularly of the 5,500 sq.m front yard and a 1,140 sq.m entrance porch. A large pond in front of the porch, around which traffic circulation has been streamlined, is one of the key features of the renovated station. The 15-metre-wide approach and exit roads have been laid on either side of the pond and the garden surrounding it.
The layout of the front portion of the station has been redesigned to include a spacious 8,582 sq.m car parking area.
A vertical garden adjacent to the main building, modern lighting, and seating arrangements are part of the beautification process.
