After winning a controversial election in 2001, President Levy Mwanawasa invited to his government some of his friends in the profession and one of those invited is George Kunda.
Kunda was one of the renowned Lawyers in Zambia having served as President of the Law Association. He together with Mundia Sikatana also late were the two prominent Lawyers in President Mwanawasa’s cabinet.
President Mwanawasa nominated Kunda as member of Parliament and appointed him as Justice Minister. He also doubled also as Attorney General.
Kunda was a key figure in Mwanawasa’s graft fight the crusade he launched which saw the number of people including his own predecessor Frederick Chiluba caught in the web.
Kunda became a prominent top government official that in 2006 he contested and won the Muchinga seat in Serenje district in Central province.
After President Mwanawasa died in during his second term in 2008, his successor then Vice President Rupiah Banda appointed Kunda as Vice president.
He served in that position until 2011 when the MMD under Rupiah lost elections to Michael Sata but Kunda returned his parliamentary seat.
Kunda was a strong voice to the ruling PF and as Zambian Eye he was one of our main source of news.
“We were mislead, we were deceived by the system that it would be a walkover,” Kunda told the Zambian Eye in an exclusive interview a few weeks before he died.
